About the Gate City Bar Association Scholarship

The Gate City Bar Association was organized in 1948 by ten African-American lawyers to give Black lawyers in Georgia a professional association of their own at a time when segregated bar associations excluded them. Today it is the oldest African-American bar association in the State of Georgia, and its mission is to create a practical appreciation for the legal profession, to encourage persons of outstanding promise to attend first-rate law schools and return to the communities that need their services most, and to uphold the principles of justice so that no one is discriminated against because of color, race, religious beliefs, or national origin.

The Gate City Foundation, Inc. is the nonprofit arm of the association, formed in 1982. The Foundation raises money each year to support community programs and awards scholarships to outstanding law students. Scholarships are presented at the annual Hall of Fame Gala, held each November at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead, which is also the Foundation’s signature fundraiser. In addition to the scholarship programme, the Foundation runs the Justice Robert Benham Law Camp for high school students, a Summer Associate Program that pairs minority law students with firms and judges, and a Community Law Clinic offering free legal consultations.
